This is my first tutorial, and a total opposite of what people usually do.

The original characters what NOT to do tutorial.

This isn't a tutorial on how to help you make your own characters, but rather a long winded guideline on what not to do when creating them.

Very nice tutorial and it's obvious to use Sonic as an example :V

I was wondering, has anyone on DA ever made a tutorial on getting inspiration via media (e.g. movies, novels, shows, etc)? I was considering possibly making one, soon.

I really don't know if anyone has or not. If you want a character that fits into a certain media though my best suggestion is to study the styles, and timeline/history of the show/movie/game you want her or him to be a part of and find out how to insert your character into the existing story properly. It can take a bit of work, but it is possible to make personal characters that fit in with the canon without disrupting it too much. :3

I'm sorry, I must have worded that wrong.

What I meant was I was interested in creating a tutorial (although that's probably gonna be more of a loose term when it comes down to the actual thing) about getting inspiration and ideas from media. One of my suggestions was to expose oneself to multiple titles so to have a rich variety of ideas to pick and craft from.

....god that hurt my brain typing that...ANYWAY.

This is true among myself as well as some of the crowd I allowed to surround myself when I fist came up with my own sprite comic. Yes Zack is a re-color, but didn't really leave him just a recolor, hence the red stripe going across his forehead. Basically tried to fuse Tails and Shadow, course, one other way to do that is to make him a hedge-fox/fox-hog/whatever abomination that fusion is called,

But seeing how my sprite editing abilities are mediocre, left it at that.

Personally, I don't plan on keeping him just a recolor, may redesign him in the future, or come up with something completely different. Time will tell,
